The head of projects and programs of the Center for the Dignity of the Child attended a security conference in Rome
July 17, 2024, 11:58 a.m.
The theme of the conference is "Safeguarding and Disability" ("Safeguarding and Disability") about the safety and protection from violence of children and adults with disabilities, as well as about sensitivity and attention that give a sense of safety. The conference was translated into American and Australian sign language. One day was completely dedicated to deaf people, their culture and the difficulties related to the topic of violence.
The main focuses of attention at the conference were focused on the challenges leading to threats of violence:
- social isolation and a lot of time online, discrimination, lack of sexuality education, excessive care, lack of privacy, dominance in power, lack of reporting mechanisms adapted to different types of disabilities all increase the risks of violence.
- complex reporting mechanism. If there is a mental disability, then it is necessary to follow the path of images, drawing and techniques that must be learned (not only by a psychologist). If the child is deaf, you should take into account who will translate it to the person responsible for security in the organization or the police.
- there are many factors that make a child more vulnerable - chronic diseases, developmental difficulties, trauma experiences. Therefore, it is important for organizations to know exactly which children they work with and to take their characteristics into account when developing safety policies, codes of conduct, reporting procedures, etc.
