“Dignity of the child in the 21st century. Reflections on research” (PANEL DISCUSSION)

“The dignity of the child in the 21st century. Reflecting on the research” - a panel discussion during which sociology, psychology and clergy experts analysed the study of UCU’s Child Dignity Center “Sexual Violence in Ukraine: From Awareness to Protection”. The study was conducted in 2021. It was the first attempt to assess the situation regarding sexual violence Ukrainians experienced in childhood.

The research consists of two parts:

• The first concerns the magnitude of the problem of sexual violence in society: the number of victims and existing beliefs about violence, the offender, and the child
• The second concerns the readiness of Ukrainians to implement programs designed to protect childhood and promote the development of sexual education among the population.

During the event, discussion participants sought answers to the following questions:

• What is the significance of research statistics for Ukrainian society?
• Is it possible to significantly reduce the statistics numbers, and how to do it?
• Childhood sexual abuse trauma: The impact of traumatic experiences on the individual and the nation’s overall psychological health.
